Sticking to the Mirrorverse concept, the phone booth is basically the door to the other side, and there is no deep scientific explanation, but it stays within conventional parameters (not magic).
In the story, the phone booth serves a secondary purpose as well.
The mirrorverse touches lightly the idea of the "dark twin", but varies on good, evil and mislead.
The blue box is a nod to Bill and Ted, as well as Doctor Who.
